What is in vitro fertilization?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a type of assisted reproductive technology (ART) that involves retrieving a woman's eggs, fertilizing them with a man's sperm in a laboratory dish and then transferring the resulting embryo back into the woman's uterus. The goal of IVF is to help a woman become pregnant.

Our Los Angeles fertility experts have been trained in the most outstanding and cutting-edge techniques and treatment procedures. Dr. Saadat’s success with IVF has been well documented positioning him as a top fertility specialist and unique in that we never batch our patients cycles together – every care plan is different and based solely upon what is right for you.

Who is an Ideal IVF Candidate?

The ideal IVF client can come in many different shapes and sizes. Let’s review them at glance who are the optimal patients for this assisted reproductive treatment:

1. Age Related Infertility

Unfortunately, the older a woman gets, the less viable her egg stores become. At Reproductive Fertility, we have a high success rate in helping women over the age of 35 become pregnant. For our age-related fertility cases, we also consider egg donation, which can dramatically improve your chances of a successful conception.

2. Medically Infertile

If you are under the age of 35 and haven’t been able to conceive for over a year, it is more likely that a medical issue is the cause of infertility. We work with a variety of medically infertile couples, including those with absent or damaged fallopian tubes, endometriosis, tubal and pelvic adhesions, or recurrent intrauterine insemination failure.

3. Unexplained Infertility

For some women, we simply cannot find a reason they cannot conceive a child naturally. However, unexplained infertility shouldn’t be a reason you can’t have the family you want. Our IVF process has helped a number of families with unexplained infertility create the family they’ve always wanted.

4. Women who have their fallopian tubes blocked

The IVF procedure is unique in that it completely bypasses the fallopian tubes. If you are capable of producing healthy eggs, but had procedures to block from fertilization, then IVF is a great treatment option for you.

5. Men with factor infertility

In some cases, the male may be responsible for fertility issues. Some of these include low sperm count, irregularly shaped sperm, or other male fertility issues IVF pairs with ICSI can deliver positive results with fertilization.

6. LGBTQ+ Couples

For LGBTQ individuals or couples who wish to have biological children, fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI) can be viable options. For same-sex female couples, IVF can be used with one partner providing the eggs and the other partner carrying the pregnancy. For same-sex male couples, a surrogate can be used to carry a fertilized egg created with the sperm of one or both partners. Fertility treatments for LGBTQ+ individuals and couples the opportunity to have children biologically related to them and to expand their families in the way they desire.

How Does the IVF Procedure Work?

The IVF procedure starts with ovarian stimulation, in which we use fertility drugs that stimulate the ovaries to produce several high-quality eggs that we will retrieve. Multiple eggs will increase the potential for producing multiple embryos, which betters your likelihood of a successful conception. During the 7 to 14-day stimulation period, ultrasound exams and lab tests are performed to track the development of the follicles.

Once the ovaries have been stimulated, we then retrieve the eggs. Your egg retrieval is performed in our surgical suite once the follicles are ready. A fine needle is inserted into the ovaries, with ultrasound guidance to locate each follicle. Fluid from the follicles is drawn into a test tube to retrieve the eggs. The procedure itself lasts about 15 minutes and will be able to go home a few hours following your egg retrieval. You will be provided pain medication to alleviate any discomfort.

During the same time as the egg retrieval, the male partner typically collects a semen sample. The semen is examined in our lab, and the best quality sperm is selected. If you feel that sperm is difficult to be produced the day of, sperm can be collected ahead of time and cryopreserved.

Once both samples are collected, we create the embryo culture. We add the best quality sperm to the eggs that have been retrieved to achieve fertilization. In cases with low sperm count or when eggs are fertilized using conventional IVF procedures, physicians will choose to fertilize via ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). Eggs are examined the next day for evidence of fertilization.

One to five days after fertilization, your doctor will transfer the embryos into the uterus via a thin catheter through the cervix. This process is like a pap smear and is generally quick and painless. A blood pregnancy test is performed after embryo transfer, and an ultrasound will occur two weeks after a positive pregnancy test.

IVF Success Rate

IVF success rates vary depending on a variety of factors including the woman's age and the cause of her fertility problems. Multiple cycles of IVF may be required to achieve a pregnancy, and there is a risk of multiple pregnancies and other complications. However, for many people, IVF offers the best chance of having a child.

Reproductive Fertility is proud to state that our state-of-the-art facility and practices produce a pregnancy rate higher than the national rate. One of the key measures of success in these centers is birthrates, which indicate the percentage of cycles that result in a pregnancy. It is important to note that the success rates for these centers are 40% higher than the national average, providing hope for those facing infertility.

“Eternally Grateful”

It is amazing what a difference a year can make. Last year we were feeling depressed and anxious and unsure about whether or not this would happen for us. This year we are expecting the birth of our first child. Dr. Saadat is amazing. You will feel the difference right away between his office and any other office around. They must make it a rule there to only hire friendly, compassionate people because everyone there was so sweet – especially all the nurses. Thanks again for everything guys!

"Felt Welcome From the Start"

I wanted to say thank you to the entire staff for making us feel welcome to our first visit especially on a Saturday. We met with Dr. Sadaat and was very informative and took time with us with all of our questions. For the financial department, Melissa was very helpful with keeping in contact with us regarding any paperwork that we needed as well as with setting our appointment. We do look forward for treatment with Dr. Saadat.

"The Solution to Our Problems"

We just celebrated our son’s first birthday, and thought we should send out warm wishes to Dr. Saadat and his team as well. Without them this would not have been possible. We had “unexplained” infertility issues and the first clinic we went to was not very friendly and we felt like we were just another “cycle”. Dr. Saadat was always willing to answer questions and the nurses there were terrific. I felt like everyone in the office was on our side, and that makes a huge difference. So thank you to everyone from Anna, Michael and Alex.

"One Big Thank You"

Dr Saadat is very open and accommodating to my financial and medical concerns. He doesn’t force unnecessary tests like other places do. He’s a very nice and efficient reproductive endocrinologist.

"Helpful in Every Way"

We traveled across the world to be treated by Dr. Saadat. My wife was not able to have babies and we could not get an answer from Doctors in our country why. It is also important in our culture that our first baby be male. Dr. Saadat was able to help my wife get pregnant and make sure that we had a baby boy. They were helpful in every way and we felt comfortable even though we are not from the United States. Everyone was patient and understanding and respectful. We will be back in a few years to grow our family.

"It's Never Too Late!"

All I can say is do not give up hope! I was 43 when I got pregnant for the first time. I had honestly been trying for years. I now have 3 beautiful children, a 6 year old girl and 3 year old twins – a boy and a girl. I feel blessed every day. It can happen. Thank you Dr. Saadat.

"The Perfect Fit for the Job"

I came to Dr. Saadat’s office because I felt like the Doctor I was working with was not a good fit. It isn’t that they were doing anything wrong but I did not feel a connection. This is such a personal type of medical treatment, and I want the people helping me to make me feel cared for. Dr. Saadat’s approach is also a bit different – he does all the ultrasounds himself – which is very reassuring. His staff is great, and his bedside manner is comforting. I am thankful for everything they all did, and thankful everyday for my daughter!
